High Frequency Radio Nets
SATERN provides emergency communications support to the Salvation Army wherever needed on site, at the local level, via VHF/UHF Nets. During wide-spread emergencies (hurricanes, earthquakes, forest fires, etc.), the 14.325 kHz Net becomes emergency traffic and H & W Net provides tactical assistance to those on site and handles outgoing H & W messages. The 14.325 kHz Net is generally on the air from 1200Z to approximately 0100Z during times of wide-spread emergency.
SATERN & THE HURRICANE WATCH NET PARTNERSHIP
WHY: For many years the SATERN 20 Meter Net assisted during hurricane events by standing by on 14.265 USB Voice for health & welfare traffic. The Hurricane Watch Net and other disaster groups could refer traffic to SATERN, knowing that SATERN was standing by to help on that FQ.
In 2021 the idea of making use of the SATERN Communicators standing by waiting for Health & Welfare traffic could be useful for extra listening points of relay for the Hurricane Watch Net (HWN). It was also logical to take care of the H&W traffic without changing frequencies.
The mission of the HWN is to pass weather traffic from ground level radio reports to the National Hurricane Center. By the SATERN Partnership the HWN could be more efficient at their mission and SATERN Stations could be more useful by the increase of monitoring relay stations. This concept was embraced by both leaderships.
HOW: SATERN leadership and communication specialist have access to the HWN Website and Chat Room. Before activation by the HWN, discussions are in the HWN Chat Room about timing and details.
SATERN leadership will page out SATERN Communicators using the TexCom email & Paging system. The system post activation details and operational time periods. SATERN Stations go directly to 14.325 USB and stand by.
During activation, HWN Net Control Stations will call for SATERN stations that are standing by to check in. It is part of their standard preamble.
PRACTICE NETS: We meet on 14:325 MWF at 10:30 CST. On Saturday we use our alternate FQ 14.320 – same time. by Bob Dennis
