Be careful, don’t make this your main go to radio.
There is a reason why they are so cheap.

They are also not fcc type accepted for ham radio because they go out of band out of the box.

I do not think so, my friend, although I am not fan of any Chinese products, Baofeng UV-5R is no different than any other HTs.

They all use, SA818 transceiver module ( https://dmr.md/upload/uploads/SA818-1W- ... 0d80f6.pdf ). This module, first introduce in late 2000s, since then, it is well tested and studied by the community. Used in many analog/digital (HT, repeater, APRS ... etc.) projects.

Almost all Chinese made HTs use this module, difference usually comes from IF, Amp, power, software. bells and whistles... And Baofeng UV-5R has everything that a regular radio operator needs.

FCC rejection may or may not be related with a frequency defect, but mostly FCC requires bunch of stupid things, for example; GMRS radio antennas should be glued to radio, so user cannot unscrew it. Or battery size and AMP. ... etc.
