2024 Field Day Schedule – June 22 to June 23

Posted on June 1, 2024June 23, 2024 By Michael M
Activities, Announcements

We will be conducting our Field Day operations at The American Legion Post 47, located at 2315 North Dixie Highway, Lake Worth, FL 33460. The event begins at 1800 UTC (2 p.m.) on June 22, and ends at 2 p.m. on June 23.

The operational hours for all guests, including guest operators and visitors, will begin at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, June 22 and ends at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, June 23.

During those guest operational hours everyone is welcome! If you’d like to come by to observe, just to see what we’re doing and what Field Day is like, we welcome you! If you’d like to sit at one of our stations and operate, we welcome you!

This is a great opportunity for people to observe and socialize, and even get on the air, licensed or not.

While we will be operating off the main grid, The American Legion will have full power and air conditioning. Food and drinks will be available, with the pricing for that set by Post 47.

No invitation is necessary, just come on over!

We will do our best to monitor the 146.67 repeater for the talk-in. For more information on that repeater, please go here – The AREC Repeater Group, Inc.

For more information on our Field Day operations, or if you have any questions, please go here – https://wpbarg.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=564

As with every event we sponsor, everyone is invited… members, non-members, participants and observers, come one, come all!

We are all very excited to be doing Field Day this year, and we hope to see YOU!

July CERT Training

Posted on May 24, 2024 By Michael M
Announcements

We had an excellent meeting this past Wednesday to a full house, with several people representing our local government in Palm Beach County attending.

I have spoken with the Emergency Program Coordinator, Division of Emergency Management, for Palm Beach County, and we are excited to make the following announcement.

In July, there will be a CERT training. For those interested, this is a great opportunity to be involved in our community. The CERT program is administered and supported nationally by the Federal Emergency Management Agency, and I would encourage this course for anyone who is looking to increase their skills in disaster preparedness, including medical operations, search and rescue, terrorism, disaster psychology, and more.

Members, be sure to see our information on this upcoming CERT training here – https://wpbarg.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=556

Our 85th Anniversary – Thank you

Posted on May 2, 2024May 2, 2024 By Michael M
Announcements

What a fantastic event it was, worthy of an 85 year legacy.

85 years as an organization is not something that occurs by happenstance. It is the cumulative work of dedicated people over decades, and we stand on the shoulders of those before us, understanding the privilege it is for us to continue bringing our service and stewardship to the community we serve.

Like everything that we do, it takes a team effort, and on behalf of the West Palm Beach Amateur Radio Group, I’d like to thank the following distinguished guests and the organizations they represent:

Robert Molleda of the National Weather Service
https://www.weather.gov

Jerri Clairday of Palm Beach County Emergency Management
https://discover.pbcgov.org/publicsafety/dem/Pages/default.aspx

Arielle Weinberger of Palm Beach County Department of Public Safety’s Division of Animal Care and Control
https://discover.pbcgov.org/publicsafety/animalcare/pages/default.aspx

Lt. Eli Shaivitz, Sgt. Ed Sperbeck, and Capt. Michael Kirschner of the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office
https://pbso.org

Johan Reyes of the American Red Cross of South Florida Region
https://www.redcross.org/

Chris Anderson of Palm Beach County ARES
https://www.arrl.org/ares

Rob Adams of Palm Beach County CERT
https://discover.pbcgov.org/publicsafety/dem/Sections/Planning-CERT.aspx

Barry Porter of the ARRL
https://www.arrl.org

Melanie Fernandez of the Gold Coast Amateur Radio Association
https://www.w4bug.org/

Of course, with immense gratitude to our host, the Cox Science Center and Aquarium.
https://www.coxsciencecenter.org

This would not have been possible without the hard work of so many dedicated members of WPBARG, who rolled up their sleeves and worked, including that entire day, ensuring its success, and every member who supports the West Palm Beach Amateur Radio Group with their membership, and most of all, Jo Cummings, who took the lead and drove this event to its success.

We had nine organizations join us; about 16 tables set up inside; three tables of equipment sales; half a dozen operators outside, working phone, code, digital, and satellites; PBSO’s Mobile Command Center; 100+ visitors; and we served lunch for everyone, with door prizes and lots of giveaways.

As we move into our 86th year, stay tuned for more exciting and fun events on the horizon!

Announcements, Events

The public is welcome. Come out and celebrate with us!

If you haven’t heard by now, on April 27th, we will be hosting the West Palm Beach Amateur Radio Group 85th Anniversary Party at the Cox Science Center and Aquarium in West Palm Beach. The event will be from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. We have several honored guests from Palm Beach County, including the Sheriff’s Office, and the National Weather Service. There will be door prizes, raffles, and other giveaways. We will be hosting lunch and there will also be food trucks available, but the food trucks you will have to pay for. Commander Smith will be operating the grill.

As this date coincides with the Florida QSO Party, we will be doing portable work on site as well. We have some space indoors available on a first come first serve for a club or individual who would like to set up a table, and we might have a spot or two for someone who wants to do some portable work with their own equipment. There is no charge (donations are welcome), so if you’re interested, act fast.

We will be holding this at the STEM Center, which is across from the Science Center. This is a very large indoor and outdoor space, including an open area and large covered pavilion. We have quite a bit of square footage indoors and outdoors.

If you’re interested in an indoor table, or would like to join us with your own equipment for the QSO party, reach out to Jo, N2QFT, or respond here.

As with everything we do, this is open to the public, and everyone is welcome! If you know someone who’s thinking about getting their ticket and they’d like to get on HF, this would be a great opportunity to bring them along. Hope to see you there!

Activities, Announcements

Beyond this being the last solar eclipse in North America for the next 20 years, it provides an exceptional opportunity for every amateur radio operator to participate and contribute data points for this important event. The information we can provide will assist domestic and international scientists, and well over a dozen participating universities including MIT, Dartmouth, Rice, Penn State, Virginia Tech, Embry-Riddle, and others.

Here is the latest information from Ed Efchak, WX2R. Ed is the Public Information Officer for HamSci, and you can engage Ed directly with any questions you may have here – https://wpbarg.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=1637#p1637
